01Write the remainder down first.

On paper, not in your head, because the estimate you are carrying was made during a period when you were deliberately not looking. Two courses. A capstone at whatever stage it reached. A placement, if one is outstanding. Anything administrative nobody has chased.

That page is nearly always shorter than the feeling attached to it, and its usefulness is that one entry on it can then be identified as the actual obstruction. The others were never the difficulty; they have simply been sitting behind the one that was.

• A capstone that stopped, which is the commonest by a wide margin and almost always stopped on shape rather than on writing.
• A placement that never came together, which is a search and a paperwork chain and does not respond to effort.
• One course, frequently a quantitative one, failed once or steadily postponed until postponing became the plan.
• Or nothing academic at all: an illness, a job, somebody who needed you, and a return that got heavier the longer it waited.

02Why a stopped capstone is usually a shape problem.

Because the pieces drifted, not because the writing failed. Your problem, your questions, the method and whatever you intended to do about it were revised separately across months, each time for a perfectly sound reason, and nobody went back afterwards to read the other three against the change.

The result is a set of committee notes that read like separate objections and are in fact one misalignment appearing from several angles. Answering them individually deepens it, because every local repair pulls its own piece further away from the rest.

Pulling the four back into agreement takes far less effort than beginning again, and it is what the free read looks for first when a capstone is the wall. 03The walls that are not about writing.

A placement is the clearest case. No amount of academic support moves a countersignature, and people lose years to this while assuming the problem is themselves. It is a search, run properly at preceptor search, and the honest read on whether your parameters are achievable comes free.

The postponed course is the other one. Something that has beaten you once takes on a weight well beyond its actual difficulty, and the usual answer is to enrol in it beside two others so it feels smaller, which dependably produces the same ending. Taken by itself, with help aimed at whatever went wrong last time, it generally finishes.

04What the free read produces.

A view on which single item is genuinely obstructing you, what clearing it would involve, and whether the rest of the list restarts on its own once it is gone. It very often does, which is why the answer here is usually narrower and cheaper than the enquiry.

I stopped years ago. Is finishing still realistic?

For most people yes, and what to settle first is administrative rather than academic: whether your credits stand, whether the route back is reapplication or reactivation, and whether the requirements moved. A registrar answers all three at no cost, and they shape every plan built afterwards.

The capstone is the wall. Where does that begin?

Send whatever exists alongside every piece of committee feedback. A stopped capstone almost always has one misalignment behind it, formed when the pieces were each adjusted separately across several rounds. Locating it costs nothing, and repairing it is far smaller than beginning the thing again.

Take it on its own rather than buried inside a full load, which is the instinct and reliably repeats the outcome. A course that has beaten you once carries weight beyond its difficulty. Alone, with support aimed at the part that failed before, it usually ends differently.

The read is free, including being told which wall is the real one. Whatever follows is priced against what genuinely remains, and that is usually narrower than the enquiry suggested, because removing one obstruction tends to restart everything queued behind it.
