01One document, twenty minutes.

Everything here runs off a single sheet of paper you make yourself, and making it is mechanical rather than emotional, which is the point. Four columns, one row per course.

Almost everybody who fills it in finds the same thing: one course is worse than they hoped and another is markedly better than they feared. Neither of those was visible from inside the avoidance, and the second one is usually where the term gets saved.

• What has been submitted and marked, with the actual figure rather than your memory of it.
• What is outstanding but still open, and the date each of those closes.
• What has closed unsubmitted, which is the column people dread and which is nearly always shorter than expected.
• What the gradebook says the course total currently is, read off the screen rather than estimated.

02What the sheet tells you that worrying does not.

Whether the marks still available exceed the marks already lost. That single comparison decides more than any amount of resolve, and it can only be made once the numbers are written down next to each other.

It also drags out the paragraph nobody reads: how your course treats late work. Where marks come off steadily by the day, a submission holds real value for longer than most people assume. Where a cut-off falls and the mark goes to zero, it does not. Those two arrangements demand opposite decisions about the same pile of unfinished pieces.

And it tells you whether your withdrawal window is still open, which matters because withdrawing and failing do different things to a transcript and to funding, and the choice between them expires.

03The free conversation to have before any of this.

With your instructor, and before a deadline rather than after it. This is the most valuable unpaid move available in the whole situation and the one most often skipped, out of embarrassment rather than judgement.

Discretion turns up far more often than a syllabus admits, and asking early is what makes it available: once a date has gone, somebody has to justify an exception instead. Keep the message short. The situation in a sentence, then the precise thing you want and the date you want it by, then what you will hand over. One week on one assignment is answerable. A long apology is not.

04What happens once the sheet exists.

Send the sheet across, or send screenshots with the syllabi and it will be built for you, and within two hours there is a straight answer on which courses remain winnable. Where they do, what gets proposed works back from the marks still on the table and is almost always smaller than expected: one course held properly outperforms thin cover across three, and the repeating obligations usually go first through the weekly drumbeat.

Where the answer is no, you are told so with the reasoning and it costs nothing. Taking payment for a recovery the arithmetic has already ruled out is not a trade worth being in. The conversation then moves to the term after this one, which is coming back to study.

I am six weeks behind. Is that beyond saving?

That turns on how long your term is and on the late-work paragraph, far more than on the six. Six weeks into a long course losing marks steadily by the day is often recoverable; the same six into a short one with a hard cut-off usually is not. The sheet settles it in about twenty minutes.

Would you actually tell me the term has gone?

Yes, with the reasoning, and at no cost. Taking money for a recovery the numbers have already excluded is not something this house does. Where withdrawing remains open and would cost you less than failing, that is what you will hear, even though it earns nothing here.

Should I speak to my instructor first?

Before contacting anybody here, and before a deadline passes. It is the most valuable free move in the situation. Discretion exists more often than a syllabus admits and is far easier to grant early. Send the draft message over if you want it read; there is no charge for that.

Can everything be taken over at once?

It can, and it seldom works. Help thinned across four failing courses tends to save none of them, since every one still wants your attention and attention is the thing that ran out. Holding one or two properly, and letting the rest go, produces better results for less money.

What does this cost?
