THE CATALOG / ENTRY 05

Essays & assignments.

The smallest order this house takes is one paper due this week. Plenty of engagements begin there and end there, because a shift ran long or a family fortnight went badly, and nothing further was ever needed.

01The list comes before the writing.

Every paper here begins with a list, not a draft: the reading we intend to use, each entry given in full with a sentence on what it brings, in your hands before a word is written.

You are meant to actually check it. Open two of them. Confirm your library can reach them. Look for anything your instructor warned the class off. The step exists because of a specific and increasingly common failure: references that look impeccable in a bibliography and turn out either not to exist, or to say something other than the claim they were attached to. A marker who cannot find a source does not assume a typo, and the conversation that follows is not about writing.

If you would rather hand over your own reading, or the paper is restricted to set texts, pass them across and the argument is built out of those. Where your list leaves a gap the argument genuinely needs, you will hear about it rather than having it papered over.

02Where marks actually go.

Rarely on prose quality, which is the thing students worry about most. The deductions gather in a small number of places and they recur across every discipline this desk works in.

03Assigned by subject, not by who is free.

A paper on ward handover goes to a nurse. One on capital structure goes to somebody who has built those models. An argument resting on statistical output goes to a person who reads output rather than recognising its shape. This matters more in written work than anywhere else here, because a fluent paragraph that quietly misstates a source does more damage than a clumsy one that gets it right, and only a reader inside the field can tell them apart.

What you get back is the draft, ahead of anyone else, with the marking sheet's rows noted beside the sections that answer them, so the coverage can be checked in a minute or two. If a marker writes back, the person who wrote the paper answers.

And if what you actually have is something already written that needs to mark higher, say so on the slip. That is a smaller job, priced as editing, and frequently the more useful one.

04Style guides, and the edition trap.

APA, AMA, MLA and Turabian, set to the edition your programme names rather than the newest one published. Programmes lag deliberately and markers work from the handbook they were given, so a paper formatted impeccably to a standard your school has not adopted collects deductions that feel deeply unfair and were entirely avoidable.

Where a programme publishes local conventions, those beat the general standard, so send the guide if one exists. Where the paper is really part of something longer, it belongs at the capstone desk, since a chapter has to agree with everything around it. The source-heavy version of this entry is the research paper desk.

SLIP 01

Send the brief

The prompt, the marking sheet, which style guide and which edition, a word count, and any reading set or ruled out by your instructor.

SLIP 02

Approve the list

The proposed reading reaches you first, a line each on what it adds. Drafting waits until you have had a look.

SLIP 03

Read before it moves

The draft arrives mapped to the marking sheet. Reworking within the agreed brief goes back to the same writer.

Questions at this desk.

Is there a minimum order?

No. One assignment stands as a complete order and is handled exactly as any larger piece would be: somebody credentialed in the subject writes it, you read it before it moves, and reworking inside the brief is included. Nothing renews, and nobody will ask what else you are studying.

How do I know the reading is real?

Because the list reaches you while the paper is still unwritten, with full references and a note on what each source adds, and you are free to go and open them. That check is built into every order rather than offered on request. Anything your library cannot reach gets swapped before drafting begins.

What about similarity software?

Papers are written from scratch against your brief, which is what those tools are built to detect the absence of. What this desk will not do is advise on getting around similarity or AI detection, and orders asking for it are declined. Correct quotation and honest citation are what keep a report clean, and both are standard here.

How fast can one paper be done?

Often within a day, though it turns on length and on how much reading the sheet demands. The slip carries a real date rather than a hopeful one. Where a deadline leaves no room to find genuine sources and use them properly, the order is turned down instead of padded with references picked to suit a clock.

How is a single paper priced?

By length and by how much reading the brief genuinely demands. A methods paper resting on ten sources and a reflective piece of identical word count are not the same job. Send the prompt with the marking sheet; the figure is itemised, it arrives the same day, and asking costs nothing.
